Jon Bon Jovi To Justin Bieber: ‘You’re an a**hole’

Take away teenage girls from the equation and the percentage of people who like Justin Bieber drops dramatically. Distaste for the Canadian Pop singer is one issue America can see eye-to-eye on; a study shows Democrats, Republicans and Independents support this notion. Bieber has also infuriated Europe: he owes a Munich animal shelter thousands after bailing on his pet monkey in Germany and showed up two hours late to a March show at London’s O2 Arena. The latter has caused one of rock ‘n’ rolls most hard working leading men to call out Bieber on his irresponsible behavior.

“Do it once, you can be forgiven. Do it enough times and shame on you. They won’t have you back,” Jon Bon Jovi told the London Evening Standard. “Then it just becomes a cliché. It’s really not cool — you’re an a**hole. Go to f***in’ work!”

Strong and probably deserved words from the 30+ year rock ‘n’ roll vet.

“Every generation has guys that do that, none of that is new,” Bon Jovi continued, stating that if Bieber keeps up this disrespectful behavior, he runs the risk of alienating his fans who pay a typically large sum of cash to watch him perform.

Bon Jovi is currently touring Europe and will return stateside in July. They’ll be doing so without guitarist Richie Sambora; he abruptly removed himself from the lengthy tour, citing personal problems, much to the surprise of Jon Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi will be at New Jersey’s Metlife Stadium for a pair of shows on July 25 and 27.

Despite No New Music, One Direction Aims To Rule Summer With Book, 3-D Film & Tour

This summer is proving to be a big one for One Direction. First the boys are headed back to America in June for their Take Me Home Tour, then, in addition to their 3-D film This Is Us, they’ll be releasing a new book.

Titled One Direction: Where We Are: Our Band, Our Story, their book will be released on August 27, just days before their film hits theaters. Yesterday (May 21) the band released the book cover to fans via Twitter and the 1D newsletter.

The only official book from the band, Where We Are: Our Band, Our Story, follows their journey throughout the past year and a half. It includes their “thoughts and feelings, hopes and dreams, highs and lows.”

The film, due out August 30, promises to also give a behind the scenes look of the band, as the video trailers show the band backstage, on tour and during music video and photo shoots as well as showcasing their practical joke side.

On The Charts: Vampire Weekend’s Second No. 1 Album

Indie rock reigns this week as Vampire Weekend debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 134,000 copies of third album, Modern Vampires of the City, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan.

Vampire Weekend’s latest is their second No. 1, following 2010′s Contra. The album’s sales numbers are the band’s career best, slightly topping Contra‘s 124,000 in January 2010.

According to Billboard, the album is the 19th independently-distributed record to reach No. 1 on the chart since SoundScan data was first recorded in 1991, and the first such album in 2013. The album was released on XL Recordings and distributed by Warner Music’s Alternative Distribution Alliance. The last indie to top the charts was Jason Aldean’s Night Train last fall.

The band’s success follows an acclaimed appearance on Saturday Night Live, on which the four-piece performed “Unbelievers” and “Diane Young,” the album’s lead single, which has peaked so far at No. 17 on the Alternative Songs chart, the band’s best-ever chart showing. They’ve been on a promo tear as of late, particularly in the commercial radio world, where the band is slowly making in-roads (they played KROQ’s Weenie Roast last weekend, for one thing).

Backstreet’s Back: Charli XCX Covers ‘I Want It That Way’

Charli XCX is not embarrassed to admit she’s obsessed with the Backstreet Boys. In fact, she loves them so much she even tackled BSB’s 1999 monster pop hit, “I Want It That Way,” for the first time at a show in Chicago yesterday (May 21).

With help from a keyboard and a drum machine, Charli made the song all her own giving it the same synth-pop feel of her recently released full-length debut, True Romance. She slowed things down and took a darker approach to the love song, making lines like “But we are two worlds apart/Can’t reach to your heart” sound much more desperate and heartbroken than BSB ever did.

But the writer of Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” who described herself to Radio.com as “Wednesday Addams meets Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice meets Baby Spice,” kept things fun. She whispered lines of the chorus, handled the five-part harmony all on her own, and even threw in a little giggle before launching into Nick Carter’s epic solo. She then ended her rendition with a very sincere shout-out, “Big up to the Backstreet Boys.”

Sara Bareilles Set To Play LGBT Democratic Fundraiser In New York

On May 29, Sara Bareilles will join Michelle Obama in New York City for a fundraising event benefiting the Democratic National Committee.

Bareilles will perform her latest single, “Brave,” at the fundraiser, which is hosed by the LGBT Leadership Council, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bareilles has said that the song off her upcoming album, The Blessed Unrest (out June 23), was written for a friend who was struggling to come out. The track has become an anthem for LGBT teens, along with anyone else who needs a little encouragement speaking up.

The singer–who finishes up her first solo tour in New York on May 23–will be joined by NBA star Jason Collins, who made news last month after becoming the first basketball star to reveal he was gay while still playing the game.

Tickets for the event range from $1,250 to $32,400 apiece.

Producer Steve Lillywhite Attributes U2 Connection To Ian Curtis Death

Big-name British producer Steve Lillywhite has worked with a plethora of famous artists including Talking Heads, Morrissey, The Rolling Stones, and most recently, Thirty Seconds To Mars.

Arguably, Lillywhite is best known for his work with U2, spanning from their albums Boy, October, War and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, to songs on the infamous Joshua Tree and more.

Lillywhite worked with what he describes as “the bad mullet band” U2 when they were on the verge of blowing up and swiftly rose to success in a time when music made unfathomable amounts of money.

How did Lillywhite manage to work with such a pivotal band at an early point in his career? Though he’s been working in the “vacuum” of the studio since age 17, the producer joked with KROQ’s Kevin & Bean in an interview Tuesday (May 21) that he has to “thank Ian Curtis [of Joy Division] for dying.”

GLSEN Honors Jason Collins and Other LGBT Role Models

At the same time the rally against LGBT hate crimes was taking place downtown in Greenwich Village on Monday night, a little further uptown GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, held its 10th annual Respect Awards at Gotham Hall. The Respect Awards honor those who have made a significant difference in the areas of diversity, inclusion and the safe schools movement, and who serve as exemplary role models. NBA player, Jason Collins, making his first appearance since publicly coming out, arrived with NBA Commissioner David Stern, who presented Mr. Collins with the GLSEN Courage Award.

“We are incredibly proud to honor Jason Collins with our Courage Award,” said Dr. Eliza Byard, GLSEN’s Executive Director. “His decision to come out is a game-changer for sports and will have a profound impact on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, particularly those who participate in or want to participate in athletics. Joining the ranks of trailblazers like Martina Navratilova, Greg Louganis, Wade Davis and Brittney Griner, we have witnessed another obstacle overcome in sports.”

Many young LGBT high school students were also in attendance and spoke about the positive impact GLSEN has had on their lives. One young man came to the podium with his mother to disclose how just a few years earlier, he had been sexually assaulted by two men who repeatedly called him a “faggot”. His mother thanked GLSEN for helping her son to triumph over this negative experience and become a respectful and confident young man, working to help other young people who are bullied and attacked.

Other award winners included journalist, LZ Granderson, bestowed GLSEN’s Hero Award; and GLSEN Educator of the Year, Mathew Beck. Fellow school teacher and GLSEN’s National Advisory Council member, Joy Lenters beamed when talking about GLSEN’s many committed educators and student Ambassadors and their impactful work to keep young people safe in schools stating “We’re all God’s children and need to be respected and protected.”

GLSEN is the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students and seeks to develop school climates where difference is valued for the positive contribution it makes to creating a more vibrant and diverse community.

Rihanna’s ‘Styled To Rock’ Inches Closer Toward U.S. Premiere

Rihanna is importing her U.K. reality TV show to the U.S., in conjunction with the Style Network. The show’s first cycle aired abroad but for the second season, Rihanna’s American fans can join in on the fashion fun.

Styled To Rock is a Project Runway-esque show produced by Rihanna, where a group of contestants create original looks. The U.K. series featured a chance for the winner to outfit Rihanna in concert, but no clear prize has been attached to the U.S. show yet.

The reality competition also offers its contestant mentors. Pharrell has signed on for the U.S. version, along with Victoria’s Secret model/designer Erin Wasson.

Storm-Chasing Member Of Shiny Toy Guns Sees Oklahoma Hometown Destroyed By Tornado

While a large swatch of native Oklahoma music celebrities including Toby Keith and Carrie Underwood have voiced their concern and support for those affected by this week’s devastating tornado that killed at least 24 people (including seven children) in their home state, Jeremy Dawson of electro-rock band Shiny Toy Guns might be the only one who genuinely wishes he’d been there when it happened.

“Chad [Petree, guitarist/vocalist] and I have been chasing storms since we were 16,” Dawson told Radio.com today (May 21) in an interview. “With my birthday falling on May 19, normally what I do every year is fly home and spend two or three weeks out in ‘Tornado Alley’ chasing storms and working with local emergency management people. But we got hired on to work on The Voice, so I was not able to go this year.”

Instead, he was in Los Angeles on the morning of his birthday when he received a call from his father in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to let him know that something was brewing in the atmosphere back home.

“I looked online to check the upper air readings, and they were extremely bad,” Dawson explained. “My day was done. All I did for the rest of the day was sit in the studio and watch radar. The tornado did this thing called a hook echo, where it begins to wrap inside itself. I ran a scan on it, and the trajectory point was right towards the city of Shawnee, a little tiny town where my dad is sitting in a wheel chair and Chad and I grew up. Sure enough, an EF-4 class tornado drops down, five minutes later a twin tornado drops down behind it, both heading straight for Shawnee.”

(The National Weather Service would go on to elevate the twister’s status to category EF-5, which is the most severe of all tornadoes with winds of at least 200 mph.)

Kellie Pickler Wins ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Country music is cleaning up this week on reality TV competitions. This past Sunday, Trace Adkins won All-Star Celebrity Apprentice. And last night (May 21), singer Kellie Pickler took top honors on season 16 of Dancing with the Stars.

Pickler shared her win with her professional dance partner Derek Hough. During Tuesday night’s finale, they were competing against Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy.

When season 16 began, Kellie was one of two country artists on the program. Fellow dancer Wynonna Judd, though, was voted off in April.

Other stars competing this season included actor Andy Dick, figure skating champ Dorothy Hamill, football star Jacoby Jones, and Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman.
