#OnTheList with Xtine: 5 New Songs You Need To Listen To Immediately

#OnTheList with Xtine is a weekly feature from Fresh 102.7’s Christine Richie that will be highlighting all things music and more, from her favorite emerging artists, top female vocalists, and much, much more!

This is a great time for new albums, especially from artists that we haven’t heard from in a while. I seem to have a knack for immediately picking out the songs that are going to touch me and maybe even break my heart. Like a moth to a flame, I’m drawn to them. I’m a bit addicted to that rush you get when an incredible lyric meets the perfect melody or when a song describes exactly what you’re going through and you feel a little less alone. I’ve found a few that I’m completely obsessed with currently, so I wanted to pass them on to you just in case you haven’t discovered them yet.

OneRepublic – “Let’s Hurt Tonight”

I think OneRepublic‘s new album Oh My My is fantastic, but there are two songs that instantly stood out to me. First, “Let’s Hurt Tonight”; this song is just perfection to me. I love any song about a complicated love. I also think this lyric is so clever” “If this love is pain, well darling let’s hurt tonight.” Plus, the way the song builds adds to the problems of the couple coming to a head and finally trying to figure this relationship out.

OneRepublic – “Choke”

I was so enraptured with the lyric “Choke on the memories.” I had to corner Ryan Tedder at Fresh Fall Fest and ask how he came up with it and he said, “Well, I lost someone.” I should’ve realized because he really captured what it feels like to miss someone with all of your being in this song. “Choke” makes me think of that lump in your throat when you’re about to cry. Now when I hear it, I wonder who he lost.

Lady Gaga – “Million Reasons”

Lady Gaga just put out her new album Joanne. The song that I couldn’t get passed was “Million Reasons.” It was one of the songs she performed on SNL. There’s audio out now of her isolated vocals from that performance and her voice is unbelievable. That’s when Gaga shines, singing her heartfelt lyrics at the piano full of emotion.

I’m glad she’s decided to put the focus back on her music. I’d like people to get back to talking about how incredibly talented she is and not about what she’s wearing. Some are calling this her country song but I don’t hear that; I just hear a great song. I love the idea of so many reasons to end this relationship but still holding out for just one good reason to stick it out. “I’ve got a hundred million reasons to walk away but baby I just need one good one to stay.”

Kings of Leon – “Walls”

After a very long wait, Kings of Leon just released their new album Walls. This is their first #1 album, which is a little hard to believe. The title track gave me chills. Caleb’s voice stands out over the sparse production. This is my kind of song with the lyric, “You tore out my heart, you threw it away.”

James Arthur – “Say You Won’t Let Go”

James Arthur was the winner of the X Factor UK. As with most artists, he turned to music when he was in pain from his parents split. He suffers from depression and anxiety and music was his only outlet. He was broke and went on the show to try and make something of himself. It was clear from his audition that he had something special. He went on to win and quickly realized that fame usually heightens any kind of problems you’re already having. James went off the rails a bit and got dropped from Simon Cowell’s record label.

Luckily, he’s found his way back and focused on the music once again. Simon has since resigned Arthur and he just put out a new album, Back from the Edge. The song “Say You Won’t Let Go” is my favorite. It reminds me of his audition; singing honest and raw lyrics with an acoustic guitar. As someone who can relate to his issues, this opening lyric was all I needed to hear.

“I met you in the dark, you lit me up. You made me feel as though I was enough.”
