FM Magazine: 2017 Miss America Crowned and Advocates for Healthier Living

Since 1921 women from all walks of life have participated in the Miss America Competition, and on Sunday night the tradition continued from Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, where 52 women competed for the coveted crown and Savvy Shields prevailed.

All contestants were evaluated on performances in a variety of categories that showcased their intelligence, fitness, leadership skills, and dedication to community service.

Celebrity judges included Shark Tank host Mark Cuban, GRAMMY award winning singer Ciara, and Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas.  Many former Miss America contestants also attended, including BeBe Shopp Waring who won in 1948!

Mr. Cuban and Ms. Douglas stated that confidence was the most important trait for Miss America to convey, and what they were both looking for in determining the winner.

During this landmark 96th year, the Miss America Organization celebrated its heritage of being the largest scholarship program for women in the United States, having awarded millions of dollars in annual college scholarship assistance over the years.

Since 2007 the non-profit has raised over $14 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Miss America contestants contribute over 500,000 hours of community service annually.

Savvy Shields vowed to continue the Miss America legacy of working for good, and will use her “Eat Better, Live Better” platform to help obese children and advocate for healthy living.

Savvy Shields also stated that she planned to use her scholarship money to go back to art school after her reign, and expressed appreciation to all involved in making her victory possible, even graciously thanking designer Sherri Hill for her winning gown.
