Deb Gordon spotlighted the Komen Greater New York City Race for the Cure with Linda Tantawi, CEO of Komen Greater NYC – the largest of the Komen affiliates which is committed to serving the organization’s important mission: no one should die from breast cancer.
“One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, “said Tantawi. “The data shows that if we can reduce disparities in access to care, we can reduce breast cancer deaths by 30 percent”.
The NYC Race for the Cure is usually held every second Sunday in September. However, this year that date is September 11th and the Race was moved to the Saturday before, in deference to the 15th anniversary of this special day.
“We encourage people to register for the Race,” said Tantawi. “We have the Kids for the Cure this year, which is a great kid’s fun run…Hoda is lots of great fun – takes selfies with almost everyone who’s at the Race… It’s going to be a great time at the bandshell with lots of great activities after the Race…It’s a really inspirational uplifting day”.
To date, Komen Greater NYC has raised $80 million and the money has supported and funded programs to help women in the Greater New York area, which in addition to the boroughs, includes parts of Westchester and Long Island.
Ms. Tantawi shared her personal story involving her sister who is now a breast cancer survivor due to early detection and diagnosis. She stressed the importance of women being diligent about their health, knowing their bodies, getting proper nutrition, seeing their medical professionals, and getting regular mammograms and screenings.
Also discussed were the many support services and innovative programs that the organization invests in, most of which are targeted towards underserved communities with high mortality rates, in an effort to save lives, and foster their mission to eradicate breast cancer.
“We want to ensure that where women live doesn’t determine whether they live, and that is why the work that Komen does is so critical, “ said Tantawi.
