Twenty One Pilots on Writing New Songs: ‘We’re Starting to Get That Itch Again’

For months, they've been concentrating on their live shows. Now, however, they're starting to think about the follow-up to "Blurryface."

The last year and a half has been very eventful for alt-rock band Twenty One Pilots. Since releasing Blurryface in May of 2015, the band has rocketed to the top of the charts, and have also gone from playing clubs to arenas: last week, they wrapped up their Emotional Roadshow World Tour with two sold out nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Radio.com caught up with vocalist/keyboardist/bassist Tyler Joseph and drummer/trumpet player Josh Dun before the first of their two MSG concerts last week. When asked about their next album, they said that they hadn’t started working on it, because they were so focused on the tour.

But as Joseph told Radio.com that’s about to change, “The answer to the question, ‘What’s your advice to a young band that’s trying to make it happen?’ [is], it’s the live show. You have to give them something where they walk away and say, ‘I want more of that.’ To create something like that, you have to take them on a journey. So the live show is very important to us, we’ve been working on that a lot. This show… has been in the works for seven months now.”

He adds, “All that is to say that we’ve been putting a lot of energy into the live show, but we’re starting to get that itch again, to start writing. To get new sounds and stuff, and so it’s gonna happen.”
