#OnTheList with Xtine is a weekly feature from Fresh 102.7’s Christine Richie that will be highlighting all things music and more, from her favorite emerging artists, top female vocalists, and much, much more!
There are so many opportunities to see free live music in New York City pretty much on any given night and weekend. It’s also home to a lot of great music festivals that highlight new and up and coming artists. I highly recommend making plans to check out the Annual Village Voice 4 Knots Music Festival when it rolls around next year. I went this Saturday where I had the chance to talk to Simon Ward and Jon Hembrey from The Strumbellas. You can currently hear their song “Spirits” on Fresh.
They’re a band from Canada that have been making music for years now; their latest – Hope – is their third. I’d say their sound is a mix of folk and rock with maybe a pinch of country. When you listen to their music, it sounds happy and upbeat, but when you focus on the lyrics you realize the subject matter is usually heavy and, sometimes, about depression or going through tough times. Their song “Spirits” is a perfect example of that.
It’s the kind of stuff Simon gravitates towards when he’s listening to other artists as well, so that’s what he chose for his contribution to #OnTheList.
Blind Melon – “Soup”
“This is my absolute number 1 top pick because of the lyric, ‘And I’ll pull the trigger and make it all go away.’ I was blown away at how honest that line was. I didn’t realize you could actually write that way and now that song inspires my lyrics.”
Lucius – “Two of Us on the Run”
“I think it’s just a beautiful song. I loved it and think the songwriting is beautiful as well. I then got to meet them and they were the sweetest so now I want them to succeed and let people know about their music.”
Lana Del Ray – “Young and Beautiful”
“She is a great lyricist. I heard it on the road and was just blown away.”
The Avett Brothers – “I And Love And You”
“I think it’s just the saddest, most beautiful song. It makes me think about leaving for the road which is tough when you have a wife and family.”
*Christine here: I added that it’s kind of like their song, “I Still Make Her Cry” which Simon wrote about that very thing.
Andreas Moe – “Step Down From It”
“I heard it on the radio in London and just thought it was really great. Now every time I hear it, it reminds me of London.”
