#OnTheList with Xtine is a weekly feature from Fresh 102.7’s Christine Richie that will be highlighting all things music and more, from her favorite emerging artists, top female vocalists, and much, much more!
A wonderful perk of my job is I have access to new music before most other people. Record labels fill our inboxes to the brim with the latest releases from their roster of artists; it’s better than working at a record store, unless that record store is Empire Records.
Anyway, here are six new songs we’re spinning on Fresh (or will be soon!) that you will absolutely be putting on repeat for weeks.
Lukas Graham – “Mama Said”
Fresh was the first station in NY to play “7 Years.” The song has since blown up and I’m pretty sure everyone has at least heard of Lukas Graham at this point. He’s extremely talented and it’s clear once you see and hear him live. His was the most Shazamed performance from the Billboard Music Awards.
Graham’s self-titled album is out now and the rest of the album is a great mix of all the different types of music that’s influenced the band over the years. The writing is very personal and honest, but not always so serious. It ranges from songs about his father’s death to being drunk & having fun with friends. “Mama Said” is the follow up to “7 Years.”
Here he describes the inspiration for this song:
Strumbellas – “Spirits”
Strumbellas are a band from Canada and Hope is their third album. I’d say their sound is a mix of Folk, Pop and Rock with maybe a pinch of Country.
You may remember this one from my anti-anxiety list. It’s about going through a tough time and knowing it will get better. I’m thrilled to say you can finally hear this on Fresh!
They’re coming our way soon, playing the 4 Knots Music Festival in New York City on July 9th at South Street Seaport. It’s free, go check them out!
X Ambassadors – “Unsteady”
I’ve written and talked about this song so much. I love everything about it and get chills every time I hear it. They did an Up Close & Personal event for us and after seeing them play, I got tickets to their show at Bowery Ballroom. Seeing them perform this song live took it to a whole other level for me. Sam’s voice is so achingly beautiful as he sings about his parents divorce. Even though it’s about that specific event in his life, everyone can relate to the lyrics.
You may have heard it on the commercials for the movie, Me Before You as if it wasn’t heartbreaking enough! Now you can hear it on Fresh. Their debut album VHS is out now.
As you can see my love for this song goes way back. However, it probably wasn’t smart to sing it in front of the guys but they were great sports!
X Ambassadors are part of the Roots picnic lineup in Bryant Park Saturday October 1st. I highly recommend you see this band live!
Ingrid Michaelson – “Hell No”
Ingrid Michaelson is one of our favorites! She’s been busy working on a new album that’s coming out at the end of August. “Hell No” is our first taste of it. It’s about that part of a breakup that I never seem to experience, when you’re over it and letting your stupid, terrible boyfriend go. She made the whole video on her phone with Snapchat filters, proving once again that she never takes herself too seriously. That may be why we love her so much.
Michaelson is playing the Beacon Theatre Wednesday, November 16th. Tickets are on sale now through ticketmaster.com.
Bastille – “Good Grief”
We first heard from Bastille in 2013 when their song “Pompeii” became a hit. It wasn’t until I heard their song “Flaws” that I became a fan of theirs. They sounded great live when they performed an Up Close & Personal event for us.
I usually prefer their stripped down stuff but I really like their new song, “Good Grief.” If you like what you’ve heard from them so far, you’ll like this one too. It’s about loss, but it’s upbeat and not overly sad. If you grew up in the 80s you’ll instantly recognize the bits of dialogue in the song from, Weird Science.
Bastille’s second album – Wild World – is expected to come out later this year.
Hozier – “Better Love”
I just played “Take Me To Church” on Fresh last week and talked about wanting new music from Hozier, and now it’s here! It’s a song he wrote for The Legend of Tarzan movie. When artists write songs for movies it makes me nervous because they have to write for the narrative of what’s on the screen. Once I heard “Better Love,” any worries went away. It definitely has his distinct sound and usual smart lyrics. I think it’s a very sexy song, and if you haven’t seen Alexander Skarsgård’s abs yet you must stop everything and watch this video now!
I’ve you’ve read any of my other lists, you know how much I love Hozier and his music. I thought his debut album was incredible and really can’t wait to hear the follow up. This is a good song to tide me over until then. No word on when his sophomore album will be released.
We’re not playing this on Fresh yet, but I’ve already started bugging my boss about it every chance I get. I’m confident I’ll break him soon.
