Living in the moment; sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? Turns out not so much for me. My mantra seems to be, “should’ve, would’ve, could’ve, if.” Just thinking about that makes me tired. I have re-hashed the past way too many times and exhausted myself worrying about things that never came to be. It pains me to think of all the things I’ve missed out on while I was busy stuck in my head. Granted not all moments are significant or monumental but there was one recently that made me think enough is enough.
It was right before I hosted our Up Close & Personal event with Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco. After Brendon did his soundcheck, he didn’t want to put down his guitar. He sat onstage and kept singing a bunch of covers: Weezer, The Outfield, Taylor Swift, the Eagles and many more. I was sitting right in front of him and his tour manager came over and said, “Are you enjoying your personal Brendan Urie concert?” I never even thought of it that way. I was watching but also thinking about a million different other things as I was getting ready to host the show. I was posting on social media and looking at my stupid phone! UGH! That was an amazing experience I let slip through my fingers. As you’re reading this I can feel you yelling at me.
There have been so many times after talking to an artist or seeing a show, I can’t tell you what we said or what they played. It’s a problem that I’m trying to fix. I could go on about this, but instead I’ll let those motivational quotes that show up in your Facebook feed be a reminder. I’m not knocking them, they’re dead on and make sense but if it were as easy as reading a quote we’d all be doing it. Breaking old habits and putting new ones into practice is the challenge. Until I can treat life like I do when I meet a hot, tattooed, slightly dirty guy and just go for it, I’ll take my inspiration from music. Here are some songs with great messages about living life in the moment.
Avicii – “The Nights”
“One day you’ll leave this world behind so live a life you will remember.”
Ingrid Michaelson – “Afterlife”
“We’re gonna live tonight like there’s no tomorrow cause we’re the afterlife.”
Jason Mraz – “Living in the Moment”
“I will not waste my days making up all kinds of ways to worry about all the things that will not happen to me.”
James Morrison – “One Life”
“If I knew yesterday what I know today, where would I be tomorrow? I won’t let my soul slide away. I’d do whatever it takes cause this is time’s only borrowed.”
Passenger – “Life’s for the Living”
“Don’t you cry for the lost smile for the living, get what you need and give what you’re given. Life’s for the living so live it or you’re better off dead.”
A Great Big World – “The Future’s Right in Front of Me”
“I spent my life trying to answer to the voice inside my head but all I found were empty questions from a time that I forget.”
Graham Colton – “Life’s What You Make It”
“Life’s what you make it, it’s yours for the taking.”
Handsome Ghost – “Eyes Wide”
“I want to feel like the first day of my life, you want to feel like there’s never tomorrow just tonight.”
The Sherlocks – “Live for the Moment”
(I know this one has been on other lists but it’s too perfect not to include on this one.)
“Live for the moment you never know what’s coming ’round the corner, we’ll have to go sometime.”
