David Bowie, Flaming Lips, T.I. to Write Songs for SpongeBob Musical

SpongeBob Squarepants is coming to Broadway. The musical, based on everyone’s favorite pineapple dweller is set to premiere on-stage at Broadway in Chicago’s Oriental Theatre. Entertainment Weekly reports that the production is slated to run as a limited engagement from June 7th through July 3rd, with a Broadway opening for the 2016-2017 season.

We can’t wait to see it obviously, but what’s surprising is the list of famous musician’s tapped to contribute original songs to the production including: David Bowie, T.I., Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Jonathon Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s and They Might Be Giants.

The music supervision will be helmed by Tom Kitt, who’s previous credits include Green Day’s Broadway version of American Idiot and High Fidelity.
