The Hunger Games just added a new female star: Lorde.
The GRAMMY winning singer/songwriter will curate the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. She will also have the soundtrack’s lead single.
Her curation will include hand picking each artist included on the soundtrack, which will be made available via her U.S. label, Republic Records, this fall. The film will open in theaters nationwide on Nov. 21.
“Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance,” Lorde said in a press release. “The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.”
The first Hunger Games soundtrack, executive produced by T-Bone Burnett and featuring a lead single from Taylor Swift and the Civil Wars, was a smashing success that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. It was followed by the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, with music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas (Twilight, Grey’s Anatomy) taking Burnett’s place and a lead single from Coldplay. It had a first week sales number over two-thirds lower than its predecessor and a No. 5 debut on that same Billboard chart.
