This Week On FM Magazine: James Beard Foundation’s Chefs & Champagne®
Deb Gordon’s guest was Kris Moon – Senior Director, Strategy and Development at the James Beard Foundation (JBF), which is a 501 c3 non-profit that was founded in New York City in 1986 with the mission to celebrate, nurture and honor America’s diverse culinary heritage. Towards that end, the James Beard Foundation offers members and the community at large opportunities to embrace that heritage and take part in many educational initiatives including workshops, classes, conferences and other experiences to help them learn more about food, sustainability, public health and nutrition.
Mr. Moon provided background on James Beard who was a friend of Julia Child and one of the first authors of cookbooks devoted to cocktail foods and grilling for men. Mr. Beard also taught cooking classes at his home in the west village, the now famed James Beard House on W. 12th Street. Mr. Moon stated that Mr. Beard “inspired a whole generation of people to think about American food and what American food truly is” and “was focused on what was truly American about our cuisine.” Mr. Beard was also one of the initiators of the farm to table movement.
Spotlighted the James Beard Foundation’s annual Chefs & Champagne® New York fundraiser and tasting gala which will be held at the Wölffer Estate in Sagaponack on July 26th. This premier event raises funds to support the James Beard Foundation’s mission and programs, and will feature culinary offerings from a select group of over 35 chefs. This year’s honoree is none other than JBF Award winning chef, restaurateur, TV personality, author and New Yorker, Bobby Flay. “He truly is just one of the greatest chefs of our generation and we really are just so thrilled to be able to honor him this year at this great event,” stated Mr. Moon.
Scholarships will also be handed out at the event to deserving culinary students in need of financial support to pursue their careers and hone their craft. “One of our main pillars of the mission is to support the education of students who are going to be the next great chefs in this country” said Mr. Moon. The Foundation has given out over 4.6 million dollars in financial aid to students thus far.
