Deb Gordon’s guest was Sue Sena, Co-Founder and President of Swish, which is an organization primarily comprised of allies of the LGBTQ community in support of LGBTQ rights. Ms. Sena started Swish after her then 31 year old married best friend came out to her after a lifetime of hiding his sexuality. She quickly recognized the need to mobilize the community and engage straight allies in the movement for LGBTQ equality.
In January 2014, Swish expanded its mission and changed its focus to grantmaking, launching the Swish Ally Fund, their partnership with the Stonewall Community Foundation. This historic venture will be Stonewall’s first and only fund dedicated to ally partnership in the LGBTQ fight for equality. Ms. Sena shared information about the Fund and how it will be implemented – dispensing grants on an ongoing basis to directly support LGBTQ organizations in New York City and worldwide. “The progress has been staggering in the last 10 years… stated Ms. Sena. “That said, there is still plenty of work to be done in this country and around the world.
This year will mark Swish’s 12th and final appearance in the New York Pride March so that all focus and resources can be put towards their new initiative. Ms. Sena encouraged listeners to look for their bright pink “Warriors for Love” float and join them as they go down 5th Avenue in grand Swish style. Singers from Swish will sing The National Anthem at the March and Swish will also hold a NYC Pride after-party at Disiac Lounge. All are invited to join them on this special occasion.
Swish will begin making its first grants in early 2015 and is currently accepting contributions to the Swish Ally Fund. Donors who contribute $250 or more to the Fund before June 30 will be listed as founding donors. For more information, visit www.swishpride.org. #WarriorsForLove
