Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ is Turned Sad with Symphonic Woodkid Remix
By Scott T. Sterling
While Pharrell Williams is currently enjoying his fifth week at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 with his feel-good single, “Happy,” the relentlessly sunny tune has been given a decidedly downbeat remix treatment thanks to French artist/video director, Woodkid.
Best known for directing high profile videos for the likes of Lana Del Rey (“Born to Die”), Drake feat. Rihanna (“Take Care”) and Katy Perry (“Teenage Dream”), Woodkid released his debut album, The Golden Age, early last year.
For his remix of “Happy,” Woodkid pits Pharrell’s falsetto vocals against a moody, symphonic track heavy on rolling pianos and a mournful string section. The appropriately titled “Sad Remix” has a cinematic feel that’s just screaming for a heart-wrenching video treatment.
