Deb Gordon spotlighted recent child abuse cases with Dr. Mary Pulido, Executive Director of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC) which is the first child protective agency in the world and whose unique work is used as a model for child welfare agencies across the nation. The NYSPCC strives to meet the urgent needs of neglected and abused children, and since its founding in 1875, has investigated more than 650,000 cases on the behalf of over two million children.

silent no moreFour year old Myles Dobson was starved and tortured for weeks, before he was found burned and beaten to death in Manhattan at the hands of a babysitter, who assumed care of Myles after his father was imprisoned. Dr. Pulido discussed the large number of children like Myles, who fall through the cracks and are victims of negligence and apathy long before their demise. “What I would really hope that people take away from that tragic case is how essential it is for everyone to get involved in protecting children. If you think a child is at risk… or if you hear a child’s screams, take action,” said Dr. Pulido. She also encouraged New Yorkers to call the child abuse hotline, 1-800-342-3720. “Even if you’re anxious and you’re worried, make the call because there will be someone on the other end who will walk you through questions – you can do it anonymously if that makes you more comfortable. This isn’t just the government’s issue, this is everyone’s issue. Everyone has to be involved in protecting children.” stated Dr. Pulido.
As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the NYSPCC will hold its 3rd Annual Spring Luncheon on Thursday April 10 to benefit it’s Trauma Recovery Program and its Safe Touches Program. The luncheon will focus on the prevention of child sexual abuse, and feature Aaron Fisher, who was the first victim to come forward in the Jerry Sandusky child abuse case. Nationally known as “Victim 1”, Mr. Fisher has become an inspiration to victims of child sexual abuse for having the courage to speak up, and is dedicated to helping other victims find that courage. He along with his mother, Dawn Hennessy and his psychologist Michael Gillum, will participate in a discussion at the luncheon and spotlight their new book, “Silent No More, Victim 1’s Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky”.
