American Authors, individually known as Zac Barnett, James Shelley, Dave Rublin and Matt Sanchez, are best known for their hit single, “Best Day Of My Life.” The Brooklyn, NY transplants recently stopped by the Fresh 102.7 studios in NYC to talk about the song’s music video (which was filmed right here in the Big Apple) and the inspiration behind the chart-topper with morning hosts Jim and Kim.
If you’re familiar with the city’s landscape, you may have noticed that the video actually starts in a bar called Sweet & Vicious in Nolita (north of Little Italy, come on!) and ends up in Brooklyn – but their journey (which is about a 45 minute walk) is what really makes the video interesting.
“We started in Manhattan and walked across the bridge to the party which was down in DUMBO,” said Barnett.
FYI: DUMBO = Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, jeez!
Not even thirty seconds into the clip, a furry creature shows up next to a guy at the bar. And here begins the real foundation of the song’s concept.
“What it was, we were kind of trying to do a reverse Where The Wild Things Are type thing. You know, instead of a human going into a monster dream world, what would it be like if a monster came into our world and experienced New York City and Brooklyn and all of these things. And playing off of that, it was kind of like an alter ego of a dude and these two, together, just showing each other the best days of their lives,” said Barnett.

But that was just the first music video. The guys decided to branch out and do something a little different; they made a second, completely different music video. This one is from a dog’s point of view – and clearly it’s the best darn day of the dog’s life. But there was more to it for the band than just wanting to do another video.
“Who doesn’t want to see a dog running around being crazy and licking up the lyrics? And to take it a step further we wanted to do something good with it. We teamed up with the Georgia Bulldog Rescue to raise awareness for dog adoption and rescue and that’s the thing. It was this dog’s best day of his life because he’s getting adopted,” said Barnett.
The bond that the group has allows them to keep a collaborative environment that helps them form these full concepts for songs and videos.
“I think it was a collaborative process, writing with us is always collaborative so we always want to stick with something we are super familiar with and [Where The Wild Things Are] was our favorite book growing up – so it just seemed right,” said Rublin.
American Authors released their debut album Oh, What A Life on March 3rd, 2014. In terms of future music, soon is what we’re all hoping for.
“We’re always writing. We have a bunch of new stuff that we’re excited about,” said Barnett.
