Ingrid Michaelson Talks About Chasing Boys In Her New Single & Music Video
Ingrid Michaelson has a new single out, “Girls Chase Boys (Who Chase Girls),” a song inspired by those around her and their heartbreaks – because she’s actually happily married to Greg Laswell, a fellow musician. She’s a local girl too, originally from Staten Island but moved to Brooklyn in 2011 with her man. Last week, Ingrid came in to talk about her new single and music video fwith Fresh 102.7’s Jim and Kim.
In regards to the personal inspiration for her song, Michaelson says that she’s been both the chaser and the chased but with her husband it was different.
“At first I was the chaser, and then I became the chasee. At first it was like he wasn’t ready for it and I went to do my own thing and then he was like ‘wait, what?,’” joked Michaelson.

Despite the song’s upbeat tempo and snazzy reggae feel, it is not that happy of a song. It has a good vibe but a deeper meaning.
“Well the one I wrote is sort of about, it’s over. Everybody’s chasing everybody. Everybody has the same heartbreak, that’s kind of the vibe to it. It’s not the happiest but I’m really good at crafting songs that have this happy snappy feeling,” said Michaelson.
The music video is an homage to Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” video from 1988 but with Michaelson’s own twist.
“We recreated it but flipped the genders so it’s with all these men behind me. It’s kind of like this androgynous, this man is really beautiful but he’s clearly a man,” said Michaelson.
Michaelson played the “Simply Irresistible” track underneath her own while recording the video which led to some interesting moves and a unique attitude.
“It has this Laissez-faire attitude that the girls have in the “Simply Irresistible” video like they just don’t really care,” said Michaelson.
The making of the music video was also a unique experience for a lot of the people involved. Michaelson said the amount of comradery involved was really fun.
“It was a kind of family affair and I feel like that comes through in the video in a really joyous way so I hope people take joy out of the video and the song,” said Michaelson.
