Travie McCoy wants you to know his new song “Rough Water,” which features Jason Mraz, isn’t the lead single from his upcoming album. In fact, it probably won’t even end up on the follow-up to his 2010 solo debut, Lazarus, which spawned the hit song “Billionaire” and gave notice to a little artist named Bruno Mars.

“If anything, ['Rough Water'] is buying me a little time to finish the record,” McCoy admitted to Radio.com.

That being said, McCoy doesn’t consider the song to be a throwaway track. It’s more about giving fans a taste of what’s to come.

“Anything I do musically I put 110 percent into,” he said. “Although it’s a segue into the next record, it’s in no way, shape or form a throwout single. The song means a lot to me and a lot to my fans.”
