“Bagboy” is the band’s first new song since the single “Bam Thwok” (sung by Deal) in 2004. (The band broke up in 1993 but reunited in 2004.)
The new song features Deal-like backing vocals, and perhaps was written with her in mind. But a spokesperson for the band tells Radio.com that in fact, it is guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering singing backup. As is the case with almost all Pixies songs, Black Francis (i.e., Frank Black) sings lead.
The bassist on the track is Jeremy Dubs, a former member of a British band called the Bennies, who opened for Frank Black and his backing band the Catholics several times, and also opened for the Pixies. Over the weekend, they announced that Kim Shattuck of the Muffs will be playing bass on their upcoming (also just-announced) world tour, which kicks off in Europe in September. A press release for the tour indicates that more new music is on the way from the band: “This will kick off the first tour the Pixies have done in nearly two years, and will give them an opportunity to do something they haven’t been able to do in two decades: premiere brand new Pixies songs, the first collection of new material since 1991’s Trompe le Monde.”
