Deb Gordon’s guests were Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of the Fresh Air Fund and Benjamin Nwachukwu a former Fresh Air Fund child. The Fresh Air Fund is an organization that places thousands of underserved New York City children with volunteer host families in the United States and Canada during the summertime, and also sends them to upstate New York camps.
Ms. Morgenthau discussed the Fresh Air Fund programs and provided details about the camps, which include Camp Mariah named after Board member Mariah Carey, where in addition to participating in the requisite fun camp activities like swimming and hiking, young people learn career skills; and camp Tommy, which is a camp just for boys.
Mr. Nwachukwu informed the audience about his Fresh Air Fund experiences — he first left his Bronx home twenty years ago at the age of 6, to stay with a Fresh Air Fund family in New Hampshire. He subsequently went back to stay with his host family for numerous summers and developed a very close relationship with them over the years. He credits both his own natural parents and his Fresh Air Fund parents for instilling in him values that have contributed to his successes in life and he encourages other families to join up with the Fresh Air Fund to positively impact the lives of other young kids.
The Fresh Air Fund is still in need of host families for this summer season. Families can register through the end of July.
