Vicci Martinez Reunites With ‘Voice’ Mentor Cee Lo Green For New Album
A former contestant on Team Cee Lo on The Voice, Martinez placed third overall on the show in 2011. Before she graced The Voice stage, however, she released a number of studio albums on her own. But it’s Vicci, her debut on Universal Republic released last year, that Martinez calls “the tell-all book of [her] life.” In an interview with Radio.com, Martinez explained how an old song found her, the inspiration behind her bold video for “Come Along,” and how Green came to be a part of that track.
“Come Along” found Martinez while she was in Sweden working on her major label debut (and ninth album overall), Vicci, released last year by Universal Republic. She had five songs penned with former Cardigans guitarist Peter Svensson before one of his friends told him to play the track for her. Recorded 10 years prior by Swedish singer Titiyo, the song never broke in the U.S. After hearing it, Martinez instantly knew it would become her next single.
“He played it for me and I went over and punched him on the arm and I was like, ‘Why didn’t you play that for me? That’s totally my style, everything about it, love the words,'” she explained. “So then I asked if I could redo it. It didn’t really break in the U.S. and we went for it.”
