Deb Gordon’s guest was Antonia Clemente, Founder and Executive Director of The Healing Center which helps women and their children who are victims of family violence, serves to address their spiritual and social needs to help them begin the process of healing and restoring hope in their lives.
Ms. Clemente discussed the organizations dedication to the intervention and prevention of family violence and abuse, and the many programs they offer, including support groups in both English and Spanish. Ms. Clemente explained the importance of providing victims of physical, emotional and sexual abuse a safe space where they can share and discuss experiences and allow the healing can begin.
Also discussed were The Healing Center’s Daughters of the Lotus program for teen girls aged 13-15 years old. This program came to fruition after adult women who regularly attend The Healing Center expressed concern about their young daughters’ dating relationships. Daughters of the Lotus helps young girls develop self-esteem and set positive goals to help them enter into healthy and safe relationships. The Healing Center now makes young people and dating violence a major focus of their work and recently held a teen walk-a-thon to spotlight the issue of teen dating violence, and plans to hold more walks in the future.
The Healing Center holds a variety of other special events to bring awareness about domestic and date violence to different segments of the community and will hold their annual Inter-Faith Breakfast on Friday June 14th from 10am-Noon at the Brooklyn Heights Business Public Library located at 280 Cadman Plaza West. The topic will be “Spirituality & Domestic Violence” and the community is welcome to attend.
