Matt Hires’ Car Breaks Down, Drives His New Sound Forward
Matt Hires, the man behind toe-tappers like “Honey Let Me Sing You A Song,” and sweet, somber melodies like “Tangled Web” stopped by the Fresh 102.7’s studio to talk about how he recently changed his sound thanks to a faulty part of his car.
“I had a ’99 Toyota Camry,” Hires told Fresh’s Kim Ashley. “It ran really well, but as far as the rest of it—it had seen better days. The CD player broke, so then I listened to the radio a lot. I listened to a lot of Top 40.”
The more he listened to pop music, the more Hires began to enjoy what he was hearing. Hires credits his recent greater appreciation for mainstream artists and pop music to the happy accident.
“A good song is a good song,” he continued. “It’s just all about concise melodies and saying the most that you can with as few words as possible.”
So, Matt Hires’ new sound change may have never even happened if it weren’t for his car falling apart. And for that, we thank you.
