L.A. indie soul troupe Fitz & The Tantrums are set to release their second full length album, titled More Than Just A Dream, on May 7, but they’re now streaming the album in its entirety. Listen to the album here.More Than Just A Dream boasts the production skills of Tony Hoffer who has worked with Beck, M83, Depeche Mode and Phoenix.
Frontman Michael Fitzpatrick told Rolling Stone he had to suffer “many, many sleepless nights” to create the “dreamy” album but in the end wanted to show fans that they’ve “grown a lot as a band and as people.”
“We wanted to show people that this band was more than a ‘retro band,” he continued. “We’d all gotten a little bit tired of that one moniker that kept getting applied to us. That first record was that kind of hybrid, and on this record, we just wanted to push it even more forward and take even more chances, and it just required a lot of experimentation.”
In March, the band took to the stage at the Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ for a lively performance and Q&A. “We’ve decided from the beginning,” said Fitzpatrick, “that we were going to try to make a sound that was as big as possible and rock your socks off without guitars and I think we’ve done an OK job of it. It actually lets you hang out and pay attention to the keyboard, sax, bass and drums. Sorry to all the guitar players in the crowd, but no noodling in this band.”
Fitz & The Tantrums will take part in the KROQ Weenie Roast May 18, along with the Black Keys, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Vampire Weekend and more. Tickets to the Irvine, Calif. show go on sale Friday (May 3) at 12:00 p.m. PT. Full details here.
