Icona Pop took to the Dancing With The Stars stage last night, rocking day-glo lipstick and black-light appropriate ensembles to rave up on “I Love It.” But the Swedish duo didn’t only bring down the usually very tame ballroom with the performance of their minor 2012 hit, they managed to earn themselves a spot on the iTunes Top 10 Songs chart before the night was through.
Icona Pop’s live-how-you-like anthem off last year’s Iconic EP was the theme song to MTV’s Jersey Shore spin-off Snooki & JWOWW and was approved by HBO’s Girls, but only debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 in early February. With Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt performance last night though they showed an older-than-usual crowd a good time, complete with glow necklaces, beach balls and a bit of lyric censoring.
With chants of “I don’t care! I love it!” the girl group ushered out neon backup dancers, who showed off their finest fly-girl moves. They even got a very well-dressed man in a tux (who may or may not have been Josh Groban, who also performed last night) to let loose a little. We’re talking spinning the glow sticks above his head like a helicopter kind of thing.
We caught up with the duo today (March 27) at 92.3 NOW in NYC to discuss “I Love It” and the DWTS performance, a change of scenery for their brand of electro-pop. Watch below.
“I Love It” may just be rising on the charts now, but Icona Pop is already looking to the future. They told Radio.com that their follow-up to their EP, due out later this year, will be a little more personal, but will still have those dance beats the fans love.
“It’s going to be kind of spread, because we’ve been through this journey,” Hjelt explained. “Now we’ve been writing and traveling the world and inspirations from all over the place. We love galloping drums, synthesizers and bittersweet melodies [but] for us, it’s very important. We have a lot to say, and we want to share.”
And we love them for that.
