With shots of the The Mission District in San Francisco, Matt Nathanson sings about the girl that got away.
His latest single, “Mission Bells,” off his upcoming eighth album, due out this summer, has Nathanson fighting with himself, asking, “What kind of man misunderstands a woman like you?” As if he’s still completely puzzled about what could have made him act so dumb, repeating over and over, “I let you get away.”
What did he do? Well that’s unclear, but he’s definitely kicking himself for saying goodbye way too soon. In the lyric video, fans get to see Nathanson in the studio making the song, which is much less sweet than his biggest hit, “Come On Get Higher” off his last album, 2011′s Modern Love. With his shaggy beard and uncombed hair, even the singer looks a little less like the clean cut boy-next-door we’re used to.
The black and white clip, also shows off the Mission Dolores Parish, which has been around since 1776 and is the oldest original intact Mission in California. The church is also the oldest building in San Francisco and has come to represent the vibrant culture in the city.
Those mission bells that keep on ringing in Nathanson’s head are also present in the video. Hanging high above, on stands that have become known as “Franciscan walking sticks,” the bells were used to tell time, letting patrons know that church was starting.
In Nathanson’s case though, the bells are just a constant reminder of what a fool he has been.
