As Morrissey continues his domination of the music press this month, he tops even himself in his latest showing of good humor and theatrics.
On April 8, Morrissey’s record label, Parlophone, is set to re-release the 1991 album Kill Uncle and the 1989 single “The Last of the Famous International Playboys.” But as Morrissey and the label prepared the release, they sought to change the cover photo. Morrissey had hoped to substitute the original cover for a 1992 photo of him and David Bowie together, shot in New York by Linder Sterling. Unfortunately, Bowie was less than keen on the idea. Although he had no legal rights to the photo, he used his leverage with EMI UK to squash the deal.
The single’s cover will now feature a 1989 photo of Morrissey alongside his friend and fellow British musician Rick Astley, taken backstage on BBC’s Top of the Pops TV show.
