“Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland,” read the statement issued by the band.
As news of the firing made the media rounds, Weiland fired back with a press statement of his own:
“I learned of my supposed ‘termination’ from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press,” Weiland said. “Not sure how I can be “terminated” from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday.”
The Stone Temple Pilots’ contentious relationship with the band’s lead singer have been well documented, primarily tied to Weiland’s history with addiction and the subsequent legal ramifications.
During a recent interview with MLive, Weiland promised to roll out Stone Temple Pilots songs from the band’s first two albums, Core (1992) and Purple (1994), as part of his 20-city solo tour, scheduled to kick off on March 1 in Flint, MI.
Weiland offers that the songs are something of a consolation for fans, since the rest of Stone Temple Pilots allegedly passed on celebrating the 20th anniversary of Core with a tour performing the album in its entirety.
“The rest of the guys didn’t want to do it. So, it was still something that there was a lot of public interest in,” Weiland said regarding performing the STP favorites on his tour. “Having that said, the idea was brought up to me through management. I talked to the guys in my solo band, The Wildabouts, and they were totally into it, as were the promoters. It worked out.”
