Gaslight Anthem Premiere Short Film ‘Every Word Handwritten’ In New York
Every piece of vinyl has a story to tell and The Gaslight Anthem bring this concept to life in their new short film Every Word Handwritten.
Inspired by the band’s song “Handwritten,” the 15-minute film follows the lifespan of one vinyl record. Directed by Kevin Slack, Gaslight Anthem drummer Benny Horowitz came to him with the initial concept.
“I really grew up around vinyl. I spent weekends when I was 10 going to record stores . . . It had been a part of my life from day one,” Horowitz told a room of fan club members at New York’s Anthology Film Archives Tuesday night.
“One of the things that inspired the story was that I wound up getting a record collection from somebody that was taken from a kid who went to jail. [He] took these records and gave them to me thinking it was nice but it did come from someone who got locked up. There were some bizarre ones in the pile.”
Horowitz explained that he often wondered if the owner of his new pile of vinyl ever wondered where his cherished records went.
“If there’s that much love it will come through in another generation. People won’t let it go away,” he added.
Much of the footage came from the band’s music video “Handwritten” and was expanded upon. Guitarist Alex Rosamilia scored the film and explained how he didn’t want music at the forefront of the film.
“I really like the idea of writing music to be secondary,” Rosamilia said. “To not take away from the film. The music is just supposed to lift you up at certain parts.”
Director Kevin Slack said he wanted it to be organic and it was important for the film to be kept open for each viewers interpretation.
