Country singer Hunter Hayes was in New York City last week for an Up Close and Personal Q&A and performance with Fresh 102.7′s Christine Richie at B.B. King’s in Times Square – along with some lucky Fresh listeners.
Although the singer has been to the city on multiple occasions, he doesn’t usually get to spend time sight-seeing due to his busy schedule.
“I love it here and every time we come for so short a time. I don’t think I’ve been to New York in the last three months and spent more than 24 hours at a time, which is awesome. No, well it’s cool ’cause we’re busy and that’s awesome,” he said.
It’s no secret that Hayes has been very busy since the release of his self-titled album in 2011, which includes the top 15 country single “Storm Warning,” the number 1 single “Wanted” and “Somebody’s Heartbreak“.
As a way to reveal his romantic feelings for a gal pal, Hayes poured his heart into ”Wanted,” because the singer explains that he’s just not good at telling girls he likes them.
“It’s a love letter to this girl. I was trying to get the point across, because I fail at getting the point across most of the time and I’m not good at saying it. And when I wrote the song, [it] became so deep and so real about what I wanted to talk about. I was like I could never play this for her; this isn’t going to work. I was like she’s going to run as she should when she hears this song. Like we’re buds. You heard that from somebody and you’re going to be like excuse me,” he said.
So did the song win this lucky lady over?
“I mean that was the idea, but I didn’t think it would actually work. So anyway long story short, I didn’t play it for her immediately. I played it for her later on and she does know that it’s written about her. We do laugh about it, we make jokes – some more awkward than others. But it definetly is about a specific someone and now its just become a song that’s really means a lot to me,” he said.
Besides ”Wanted,” Hayes’ absolute favorite song to play live is “Somebody’s Heartbreak.”
“We do this big jam section in the end of it that we won’t be able to do to acoustic guitars. It just won’t come across. But it is one of those songs that we have so much fun playing,” he said.
After the Q&A session, Hayes performed the single off his self-titled debut album, “Somebody’s Heartbreak,” a slow paced ode to making a girl his.
As for headlining a tour in the near future, Hayes tells fans to stay tuned.
“I really want to. I’m itching to go back out on the road and do a headline show. I miss it. I’m loving being on the Blown Away tour. But I’m excited to take what I’ve learned – take what’s come out of that tour and put it into something that we can build on,” he said.
Hayes is also interested in collaborating with artists such as Vince Gill, Stevie Wonder and Jason Mraz in the future.
