Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love is synonymous with Christmas music because of her holiday classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” An iconic song, it has been covered by U2 (with Love herself on backing vocals), R.E.M., Jon Bon Jovi, Cher, Mariah Carey, Joey Ramone and Sha Na Na among others.
But in 1992, she began adding to her Christmas repertoire with another classic, “All Alone At Christmas,” which she recorded for the soundtrack of Home Alone 2. The song, written for her by E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt, came about because the film’s director Chris Columbus wanted her to do a new version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” As Ms. Love told CBS Local, she wasn’t interested in doing another new version of that song.
In 2005, she added to her seasonal songs once again, with a song called “Christmastime For The Jews,” a song in the style of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound style that was produced as a Robert Smigel animated clip for Saturday Night Live. The song pokes fun at things that Jewish people can do on Christmas, including: “They can finally see King Kong without waiting in line, they can eat in Chinatown and drink their sweet-ass wine” (a reference to Manischewitz wine). She says the song still earns her money (likely due to online play), but she had to explain the song a bit to her Jewish friends.
Love makes her annual holiday appearance on Late Show With David Letterman this Friday night (December 21), and her annual Christmas show will be held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center the following night (December 22).
