The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame announced its inductees for 2013 at a press conference held at the Nokia Theater L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles today, and two solo acts who have been eligible for years have finally been voted in: Donna Summer and Randy Newman. (Artists are eligible 25 years after their first release.)
Some of the artists who were on the ballot but didn’t get enough votes to be inducted include Chic, Deep Purple, Procol Harum and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
2013’s other Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees include legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy (making them the fourth rap act to be inducted, after Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and The Beastie Boys), classic rock bands Rush and Heart and bluesman Albert King (whose most famous song, “Born Under A Bad Sign,” was famously covered by Cream).
Summer, who passed away earlier this year, is one of the few disco-associated artists to be inducted (The Bee Gees and ABBA are two others). After her passing Elton John and Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee Jon Landau (Bruce Springsteen’s manager) both said that she should have been voted in during her lifetime.
These days, Randy Newman is more well-known for writing music for films and television than for making his own records: all six of his Grammys are for the music he produced for films; he also has three Emmys and two Oscars on his shelf. But his own albums, including 1970’s 12 Songs, 1972’s Sail Away, 1974’s Good Old Boys and 1977’s Little Criminals are all regarded as classics.
The 28th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, and it will air on HBO on Saturday May 18 at 9 pm ET. Tickets to attend the ceremony go on sale on January 25. For more information on tickets, go to rockhall.com.
