Deb Gordon’s guest was Moira North, Founder and Artistic Director of Ice Theatre of New York, which is the first non profit of its kind and focuses on ice skating as not just a sport, but as a an expression of art.   The organization also places an emphasis on community outreach to bring ice skating to a broad audience.

Discussed were the educational programs Ice Theatre offers, which include skating clinics and an apprentice program.  Several high profile skaters started out in their apprentice program, including Olympian Sarah Hughes.  Ms. North expanded on why community outreach is one of the most important factors of her work.

Also discussed were the fact that the Ice Theatre offices were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy and the efforts to rebuild and move back into their longtime home.  A dedicated link has been added to their website to raise funds for the effort.

Spotlighted Ice Theatre’s upcoming Winter Holiday Celebration, which is a free family friendly event at Riverbank State Park, featuring performances by the Ice Theatre, and an ice skating performers from Harlem, music, refreshments, a tree lighting, and free ice skating for all attendees.
