Last year, Marx teamed up with Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, the comedy duo known for their Internet videos and IFC show Rhett & Link Commercial Kings. The two guys called him up out of the blue to ask if he wanted to work on a song for one of their latest commercials.
Marx said yes. Then the guys explained it was for a colonic place. “Awesome,” was still his response.
“The more irreverent the better,” Marx told CBS Local. “If it was for a greeting card company I wouldn’t want to do that. But a colonic place? Let’s go!”
For months after Marx said people who came to his show were screaming at him to play the colonic song.
Marx understands though that a joke can go too far and says he ask himself three things before he signs on to something out of his wheelhouse: is it funny to him, is it offensive to people and will it show a different side of him.
Marx says he has gotten a reputation as a very serious singer/songwriter, but would like to show people they’re wrong.
“I take singing and songwriting seriously,” he said. “But I don’t take me seriously at all.”
He even said that his concerts are more like a comedy shows than anything else.
“I’m not curing cancer, “ Marx said. “I don’t take any of this seriously. It’s goofy. So I think there is a part of me that is interested in showing another side.”
Marx even says he doesn’t mind if people laughing at him, hopefully though they’ll learn to laugh with him.
“If I had a choice to be seen as a serious singer songwriter or have people view me and say he totally get the joke, he’s funny. I’d take that.”
Marx is currently on tour until December. Check out tour dates here.
