Springsteen’s Daughter To Chris Christie: Horses Aren’t Food
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie hasn’t been shy about his love of Bruce Springsteen, but will he hear Springsteen’s daughter out?
The Boss’ daughter, Jessica Springsteen, has sent a letter to Christie urging him to sign a bill prohibiting the slaughter of horses and sale of horse flesh for human consumption, as well as the transportation of horses to slaughter purposes, reports the Asbury Park Press.
Jessica, 20, is an accomplished equestrian who regularly competes in national competition. She, in addition to ten other New Jersey residents, are asking Christie to sign (and not veto) the bill, which NJ legislature passed in June. As of Wednesday, the governor is still reviewing the bill; he has until September 24th to make a decision.
“I have spent my life with horses and they are our partners and companions,” Springsteen said via the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which sent the letter to Christie last week. “I believe that horses deserve to be treated with respect, and their lives should not end with the horrors of a slaughterhouse.”
While the consumption of horse meat is far more popular abroad than in the US, New Jersey serves as major pathway for horses being transported to Canada for slaughter – something the bill hopes to shut down.
As Christie’s deep Springsteen fandom (as in, he’s been to hundreds of shows and sang “Thunder Road” on Fallon), the love hasn’t really been reciprocated by the Boss. Springsteen blasted his governor’s tax policies in a letter to hometown paper Asbury Park Press in 2011.
