Michelle Obama demonstrated her style and oratory skills with a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday (September 4). But she also showed off her musical tastes when she came out to the voice of Stevie Wonder (“Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours”) and wrapped her talk with the upbeat sounds of Beyonce.
The First Lady closed the first day of the Democratic National Convention with a heartfelt speech that outlined the connection she and her husband have with common Americans.
“Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it,” she said. “And he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love.”
But while FLOTUS (First Lady Of The United States) made an impact with her words, she demonstrated her swag with the music that blasted after she finished her speech. Fans of Beyonce recognized the sound of “Get Me Bodied,” from her 2006 album, B’Day, as it lit up the convention floor. However, the version of the song that played was custom made for Michelle Obama.
Back in 2010, the First Lady launched the “Let’s Move” campaign and enlisted Beyonce to provide the theme music. Beyonce flipped “Get Me Bodied” into a fit-friendly song called “Move Ya Body.” She created a video to go with the song that was designed to motivate kids to get moving. [See video below]
The convention speech coincided with Beyonce’s 31rst birthday, which I’m sure was not lost on Mrs. Obama. Beyonce and the Obamas have a relationship that goes back to his days as a presidential candidate. Bey’s mogul husband Jay-Z issued get-out-the-vote calls and helped with campaigning. Beyonce famously sang at the presidential inauguration.
