Deb Gordon’s guest was Robert Gebbia, Executive Director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which is the largest national non-profit dedicated to preventing and understanding suicide through research and education. It was founded in part by families who lost someone to suicide and felt they could not get good information about why they lost their loved ones; and also by scientists who felt there was not enough support for research into the causes of suicide and how to prevent it.
Mr. Gebbia provided data about suicide and how it impacts young adults, teenagers, all races and economic groups. He discussed the many programs and services in place to help the families of suicide victims as well as those in place to help those who have attempted suicide prevent a second attempt. Also discussed were the Foundation’s efforts to improve media coverage of suicides.
Spotlighted the Foundation’s Out of The Darkness Community Walks, which creates awareness about the issue, and National Survivor of Suicide Day, which is held in November and helps to educate, inform and empower survivors and reduce the stigma associated with suicide.
