“Do one thing for another human being,” Beyoncé said in a video for the United Nation’s World Humanitarian Day. “Nothing is too small.”
On August 10, the singer continued to spread this message when she performed her song “I Was Here,” off her 2011 album 4, for the U.N.’s General Assembly, MTV reported.
The performance, which was filmed for World Humanitarian Day and will air on August 19, featured Bey in a beaded white floor-length gown in front of screens that flashed images from different locations across the globe that have been struck by disaster along with the faces of the humanitarian workers who are there helping those in need.
This event and the upcoming day are meant to honor those who lost their lives, like the 22 humanitarian workers who died in a terrorist attack in Iraq on August 19, 2003.
The day also looks to encourage others to join the effort by putting out a call to the world to do one good act to help someone in need, in hopes to help reach the UN’s goal of 1 billion volunteers.
The U.N. Under-Secretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, took the stage to thank Beyoncé for her help, though the singer seemed humble to oblige.
“I told [Beyoncé]: It’s great that we have her, because she can reach millions of people,” Amos said. “I could spend the rest of my life doing what I do, and I wouldn’t reach a 10th of that number. And she said: ‘Don’t sell yourself short.’ ”
But in the end it wasn’t about glitz and glamour it was about encouraging others to join the fight.
Go here to leave your footprint alongside Beyoncé by writing a message of hope that will be sent out to the world on August 19.
