David Guetta Talks Finding Success in America, Being Voted #1 DJ
David Guetta first exploded onto the U.S. scene with the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” in 2009. Since then, the French DJ and producer has quickly made a name for himself on the charts, gaining respect from fans and fellow artists alike.
With superstars like Usher, Ludacris and Chris Brown gracing his 2011 album, Nothing But the Beat, Guetta used his dance music background to prove himself to American audiences as a force to be reckoned with. Hits like “Titanium,” featuring Sia, and “Turn Me On,” featuring Nicki Minaj, turned listeners on to Guetta’s new breed of pop music.
The producer recently sat down with KROQ in Los Angeles to give his take on finding international success as a dance music producer.
“Our music has been exploding so much in the last year and there’s so much awareness in America,” he said. “People are starting to know what a DJ is, what a producer is, and it’s wonderful. It’s unbelievable to see how our culture grew up and is getting more respect, and more excitement from the media…it’s incredible.”
“I Gotta Feeling” set records as the highest-selling digital single of all time in the U.S., and Guetta has not slowed down since. He recently headlined Las Vegas festival Electric Daisy Carnival, and premiered his latest music video, “I Can Only Imagine,” featuring Chris Brown and Lil Wayne, last week.
The clip shows the trio in a futuristic nightclub with break dancers and skaters surrounding Guetta’s glowing DJ booth. Director Colin Tilley explained the concept in a behind the scenes video saying, “It’s got a really just crazy vibe, and he’s controlling everything that’s happening in his world.”
Guetta is taking that theme to heart, embracing his real-life success after being named the #1 DJ by DJ Mag.
“It’s a great honor, especially at a moment when I was releasing such a big crossover album,” Guetta said. “To see that… to see my original fans and the DJs voting for me as #1 DJ is very important because it shows that I manage to keep that balance in what I do.”
Guetta added that the support he feels from fans puts real value in his new title.
“But the truth is I see it every day. That’s my relationship with the party people that are coming to my shows, so of course it’s an honor to be voted #1 DJ.”
Next up for Guetta is a string of European tour dates and club residencies, with his next U.S. appearance scheduled for August 31 at New York’s Electric Zoo Festival. Check out a full list of tour dates below.
