While most people will be bouncing from one lame party to another, looking for a half-decent fireworks display to watch, Kory Leigh Glattman will be singing our great nation’s National Anthem for the premiere fireworks display in NYC.
New Jersey native, Kory, 23, won the honor of being Macy’s 4th of July Star Spangled Sing-Off winner, and singing the national anthem at Macy’s 36th annual fireworks celebration is the big prize.
The contest took place on Facebook, where contestants could submit videos of themselves singing the Star Spangled Banner for the people of America to vote for, giving Macy’s the top 10 contestants. After the top 10 were selected, Macy’s creative team handpicked the winner.
Kory told Jim & Kim she first heard about the contest through two friends, and she decided to submit a simple rendition with just a piano and her voice.
When Macy’s called her to tell her the good news, she had missed the call, and they left her a message saying to call them back because they needed information from her. Unknowingly, she called Macy’s back and they broke the news to her that she was the sing-off winner.
“I think I was more excited than nervous, I was like ‘Oh my God!’,” she said. “I’m sure I was loud.”
Kory said she’s only a little nervous to perform, being that she’s sang the national anthem multiple times at Nets, Knicks and 76er’s games, as well as other high profile events at Madison Square Garden.
“It’s such an honor,” she said. “Like I said, I’ve done it for the Knicks games, and that’s so awesome, but this is, like, our nation’s birthday, you know?”
Despite having experience singing the song in front of large crowds, Kory said she always worries about forgetting the words to such a well known song.
“Do you know how many times, before I go on, people are like, ‘Are you ever nervous you’re going to forget the words’ and I’m like, ‘Why would you plant that seed in my head?’,” she said. “And then, I go out sometimes, and I’ll be singing it and I’ll start thinking about other things, and I’m like, ‘Stop, stop, stop.’”
Before her performance at the fireworks display, Kory is singing at the Mets game with 2012 Miss America, Laura Kaeppeler. She said her family is excited for both of her performances, and they will be joining her at the game and the fireworks show.
Kory graduated from Berklee College of Music, alongside fellow musicians Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan of the band Karmin.
For the best views of the fireworks, head over to 12 Ave. below 59th st and access points along 11th ave.
Good Luck, Kory!
