It was do or die on the third week of Duets as the show prepared to say its first goodbye.
Singing the songs that inspired them, the partners performed hits from artists like Michael Bolton, Alicia Keys and Gladys Knight, dedicating each song to the friends and family who have rooted them on since the very beginning. But unlike the last two episodes, this night would end with the bottom two contestants singing for their life in an a cappella face off.
It was a good night to be Jennifer Nettles. J Rome once again showed why he’s controlled the top spot since the beginning with his tearful rendition of Bolton’s “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You,” dedicated to his late grandfather. Coming in second was Nettles other partner, John Glosson whose take on the religious hymn, “How Great Thou Are” brought down the house. The no frills, all chills performance made Kelly Clarkson admit she isn’t above rigging the competition, joking, “You’re too damn good! I’m secretly trying to think of a way to kick you off the show.”
Since, both Team KC’s partners have been struggling, it’s not that farfetched that she would be jealous. This time around Jordan Meredith gave it her all with a sultry performance of Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart” landing her in the middle of the charts. But Jason Farol fell to the bottom two again with his take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
John Legend and Meleana Brown were number one last week, but lost a little steam with their soulful rendition of “Ain’t Got You” by Keys. His other partner, Bridget Carrington commanded the stage with Knight’s rendition of the Marvin Gaye classic “Heard It Through The Grapevine” to finish in the top five.
Robin Thicke, on the other hand, continued to be the underdog after both his partners fell to the bottom last week and didn’t have much luck this time around either. While Olivia Chisholm showed off her moves with Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love,” Alexis Foster came in last with Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly.” In the end, Foster couldn’t overtake Farol with her a cappella rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman,” leaving poor Robin one (wo)man down and one step closer to having to say his own goodbyes.
