Burmese freedom fighter Aung San Sun Kyi will be honored by Bono, Live Aid organizer/musician Bob Geldof, rapper Lupe Fiasco, actress Vanessa Redgrave and more at the Electric Burma concert. The sold-out benefit concert will be held at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on June 18th, with proceeds going to Amnesty International and the Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Trust for Health and Education.
Electric Burma will feature Bono as a presenter rather than a musical force, though one never knows what may happen with Bono in the house. He’s shown his support for Aung San Suu Kyi in the past many times, even penning the U2 single “Walk On” in honor of the former political prisoner. This led Burma to ban U2′s 2000 album All That You Can’t Leave Behind, which features the Grammy-winning anthem.
Bono will present Aung San Suu Kyi, now the leader of Burma’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party, with Amnesty International’s highest honor, the Ambassador of Conscience Award. Past recipients of the award, which is given to “individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in the fight to protect and promote human rights,” include Nelson Mandela, Peter Gabriel and U2.
At Electric Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi will also accept her 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, which she received while detained under longtime house arrest by the Burmese government. The concert marks the first trip to Europe in more than two decades for Aung San Suu Kyi, who was just recently granted a passport by the Burmese government.
In addition to Geldof, Fiasco and Redgrave, other Electric Burma performers include Damien Rice, Angelique Kidjo, Jack Gleeson (of HBO’s Game of Thrones), Riverdance, and more.
