It’s another great week for fans of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” as the track spends it’s third week in the #1 position on Billboard’s Top 100 and breaking a digital sales record, becoming one of only five songs in history to sell over 400,000 digital copies in a single week.
Gotye spoke to Alice@97.3/San Francisco about his impressions of his unusual song ending up on the top of the pop charts.
“It’s very flattering obviously. It’s felt strange. I didn’t expect it for a song like that or really for probably any of my music. I’ve never been making music dreaming of having pop single success,” Gotye said.
Many might be surprised to find out he’s a fan of a certain pop artist: Katy Perry. “I think some of her songs are fantastic,” Gotye said about the pop star. “They’re incredible pop songs. Teenage Dream is probably…yeah. ‘Teenage Dream’ comes to mind.”
Gotye confesses to liking more than just Katy Perry, however: he’s got a certain affinity for the way pop stars did things in the ’80s. “I love a lot of artists, I guess,” Gotye said. “Especially I think there was a point in the ’80s where a lot of artists who were doing more experimental, artsy things did have a lot of mainstream success and carved out their own niche and their own sound world [but] still had a very big audience.”
Just the same, Gotye is still getting used to success in the pop world on his own terms. “But having made music for 10-15 years and done it in a very independent way and had mostly alternative success even in Australia, [pop music] wasn’t a world I expected to enter in any way.”
