Reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year Taylor Swift is known for her chart-topping singles and sold-out live performances but she could be hitting the big screen portraying another singer soon.
Variety reports Swift is in talks for the role of Joni Mitchell in an adaptation of Sheila Weller’s book Girls Like Us. The film will examine the careers of musicians Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King.
“Swift does not have an official offer, but has been linked to the Mitchell role for several months as other actresses have auditioned to play Simon and King, including Alison Pill (Midnight in Paris) for the latter singer,” Variety reports.
This won’t be Swift’s acting debut. In 2010 she made her film debut in Valentine’s Day. Earlier this year she voiced the part of Audrey in Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax while in 2009 she played a rebellious teen on an episode of CSI as well as had a cameo alongside Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana: The Movie.
“Acting is something I’ve been fascinated by my entire life,” she told MTV News earlier this year.
While she admits to have read scripts over the past five years, Taylor said it has to be the right role to accept the job. “I would want to have the time, the ability and the love for something, the love for a character to where I could really make that commitment to it.”
Currently working on her new album that’s due for release later this year, Taylor’s latest two singles “Eyes Open” and “Safe & Sound” featuring The Civil Wars can be heard on The Hunger Games soundtrack.

Canadian singer-songwriter and painter Joni Mitchell hit mainstream success in 1969 when she received her first Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance for “Clouds.” By then her sound expanded beyond acoustic folk music toward pop, rock and later jazz. After a year hiatus from touring to paint Mitchell got back on the road to promote her chart topping album Blue.
Her songs have been covered by the Counting Crows, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, George Michael, and Sarah McLachlan, among others. Artists from Madonna to James Taylor cite Mitchell’s influence and even Kanye West and Mac Dre have sampled her music. Popular hits include “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Free Man in Paris,” “Help Me” and “Woodstock.” Mitchell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007.
