Kim Berk w/ Jason Mraz: Backstage @ the Hard Rock Cafe [Interview]
Before Christina Perri’s intimate, Up Close and Personal Fresh concert at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC on February 14th, one half of the Jim & Kim morning show, Kim Berk, got a chance to sit down with the evening’s special surprise guest, Jason Mraz, for a quick, backstage interview.
Find out what’s been going on in Jason’s busy life right here!

Kicking off the convo, Kim went right for Jason’s throat, calling him out on his upcoming album Love Is A Four Letter Word taking so much time to hit shelves. But Jason says it was all so the record would be as close to perfect as can be. “It takes no time to fall in love, but it takes years to know what love is,” Jason said. “I wanted to make an album about love, a retelling of love and an awakening to love. And I found that was a more daunting task than I assumed”
This took the conversation into the steamy realm of baby-making and whether or not his fans have ever told him about, or if he has listened to his own songs while “practicing” said baby-making.
Moving on, Jason went to school in NYC, so Kim wanted to know what his favorite NYC moment has been. He says “they’re all embarrassing, I was usually wearing a dance belt.” He also used to rollerblade… A LOT, and remembers doing the central park loop and running errands for friends at school.
Keeping with the NYC theme, Kim wanted to know if there were any food spots that he hits whenever he’s in town. Jason said he wanted to pick up a falafel, but the guy’s fryer was broke — some call that fate. But Jason IS fond of the new, natural food joints spring up around the city, though.
What was it like when heard his own song on the radio? Well, let’s just say he wasn’t singing along, but he was mouthing some words!
Kim finished it all up with a hot seat question for Jason (which she also asked Christina):
Which game show does your love life most resemble: Survivor, The Price Is Right or Jeopardy? Jason had something to say about each show as it relates to his relationships, but ultimately decided on Survivor: “Because I like to think that with every relationship, I’m in it to win it. Let’s just hope I don’t get voted off!”
At the very end of Christina Perri’s performance, Jason came out to do a little duet with her and then performed one more of his own songs for the appreciative crowd. What a great surprise!
Here’s the song Jason sang with Christina…
Jason has just announced details of his hugely anticipated new album, including a new release date. LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD – which includes the heartfelt hit single, “I Won’t Give Up” – will now hit stores and digital retailers on April 17th.
Produced by multiple GRAMMY Award-winner Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, Christina Perri, Young The Giant), LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD marks Mraz’s finest, most fully realized collection to date. The album is Mraz’s fourth studio release and first new collection since 2008’s WE SING. WE DANCE. WE STEAL THINGS.
“It’s personal. It’s melodic. And it’s mellow,” Mraz recently told Billboard. “There’s a couple of up-tempo tunes, but mostly the rhythm-of-the-heartbeat kind of takes precedence on this record. It feels more like the pace of life. At least, based on my life and what I’ve been doing.”
In other Mraz news, fans can now enter Jason’s “#IWONTGIVEUP Photo Contest,” where you are invited to post a photo to Instagram that best represents what “I Won’t Give Up” means to you.
