The Giants celebrated their big Super Bowl win with a ticker tape down the Canyon of Heroes, and Jim, Producer Craig and I couldn’t wait to be a part of it yesterday.
As soon as we got off the air, we grabbed the 1 Train from Varick Street and got off at Chambers. Now, I am not incredibly familiar with that area of lower Manhattan (the West Village, I’ve got that down…not so much the Financial District) so we just followed the stream of Giants-clad fans headed for the parade route…and that’s as far as we got!
The police had all of the streets barricaded so that you couldn’t get down to the Canyon of Heroes and we ran into all kinds of characters who called in sick to work, got their kids out of school, were mad they couldn’t get through or were just plain drunk!!!!
One girl actually tried to hop over the barricade and was promptly caught mid-air by one of the police officers on guard there who then placed her on the other side…at which point she let loose a steady stream of curses that made even a seasoned bad-word thrower such as myself blush. The cop didn’t lose a beat. He said with a straight face, “Now, you sound like my wife.”
We talked to a t-shirt vendor hawking his wares for $10 on the street, found out what excuse people used to call into work or get their kids out of school, chatted with the cotton candy man and let one Jersey girl vent about her inability to get any closer to her beloved Giants…
Not only THAT, but we had also talked to people about their preparation for the big day!
How does a Modell’s manager that works IN the Canyon of Heroes prepare for the rush of fans on an insane day like yesterday? What are the construction workers doing while the parade is going on? And where’s the best place to stand for the parade? We got all those answers and more!
