Artists Covering Other Artists: The Many Reinventions of a Pop Song
For those of you who didn’t tune into Monday night’s episode of the voice, you missed out on an AMAZING cover by contestant Lindsey Pavao. At first, the judges seemed a bit puzzled as to what song Lindsey was singing, then the famous party song line of “Hey girl, it’s your birthday” came out of her mouth.
Say what!? Is she covering R&B singer, Trey Songz right now?! Indeed!
One by one the judges went from puzzled to impressed and chairs began turning. First Christina, then Cee-lo realizes what’s going on behind him, and then finally Blake turns around. All of them had the same look of confusion/amazement on their face, as did I. There are thousands of covers floating around on the internet and Youtube, but few are as memorable as Pavao’s ‘The Voice’ debut.
Let’s take a look at some reinvented pop songs…
Lindsey’s rendition of ‘Say Aah’ is one of the most unique covers I’ve heard in a while and it was exciting to see such talent take the stage. Can’t wait to see what she does next!
Check out Lindsey’s performance!
So why didn’t hunk-a-licious Maroon Five front man, Adam Levine turn around? No explanation was given, but it looks like he is missing out on a keeper. Maybe he thought she would work better with the other coaches? Who knows. At least he’s extremely good looking– guess I’m just sad that I didn’t get to listen to his voice and stare into his eyes through the television screen.
This got us in the mood for some more popalicious cover songs out there. But we didn’t want to hear a simple, straight up cover. We wanted to hear some of our favorite songs reworked in the same way Lindsey did with Trey’s “Say Aah.”
Like Jeremih’s amazing cover of Adele’s “Rumour Has It”…
Or this hilarious rendition of Britney Spears’ ‘Womanizer’ by the All American Rejects…
And Anya Marina’s cover T.I’s “Whatever You Like”…
Oh, and Sara Bareilles’ take on ‘Single Ladies’ by the one and only Beyonce!
Lest we forget everything our pals Karmin do!
