[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Vanessa Carlton[/lastfm] is giving fans a special early Christmas gift this year with her release of Hear The Bells, a brand new four-track holiday EP that features original compositions coupled with two incredible covers; making this holiday season just a little more magical.
The song choices on Hear The Bells really couldn’t have been any better. Along with accompaniment by the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, Vanessa chose to include a moving rendition of the popular Christmas standard Do You Hear What I Hear? to kick the EP. A unique reworked version of Hear The Bells (off Carlton‘s most recent release, Rabbits on the Run) follows the opening number and precedes the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Lennon[/lastfm]/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Yoko Ono[/lastfm] classic Happy Christmas (War Is Over). Carlton really made the song her own and the character that is bursting at the seams in the Lennon classic flows well into the close of the EP – an intimate acoustic version of one of Carlton‘s biggest hits, A Thousand Miles.
Carlton‘s approach on Hear The Bells really works very well. She could have went the route of forcing a bunch of standards mixed in with original holiday songs to make a full length LP, but instead she chose to focus on fewer songs, preserving the originality that makes this EP so great and different from other holiday releases.
