Matthew West Brings Fans New Holiday LP, “The Heart Of Christmas”
[pullquote quote=”Since the beginning of my career, I’ve dreamed of making a Christmas album” credit=”Matthew West”]GRAMMY nominated artist [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Matthew West[/lastfm] returns once again with a brand new LP; but this time around, he’s treating fans with a little something special. West‘s new record, The Heart of Christmas, gives listeners a unique look into what the most magical time of the year is like in West‘s hometown of Nashville; aka - Music City.
West‘s first holiday record is packed with extremely passionate, spiritual renditions of a variety of popular Christmas standards. As a whole, the record has twelve songs; half of which are original holiday numbers that West wrote himself. As a contemporary Christian artist, the selection of songs Matthew didn’t write that are included on The Heart of Christmas revolve mostly around the spiritual/Christian aspect of Christmas. However, the record is not without the classics that focus less on religious subject matter like Jingle Bells and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas; which are two of the albums best tracks.

West also brought in a few extra hands to help him spread the joy of the season. The albums guest appearances come in the form of GRAMMY winners and nominees by the likes of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Amy Grant[/lastfm], featured on Give This Christmas Away and American Idol runner up [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mandisa[/lastfm], on Christmas Makes Me Cry. Country star [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Vince Gill[/lastfm] also lends a hand on perhaps the albums strongest track, Leavin’ Heaven, a beautiful acoustic number with warm, subtle instrumentation complemented by some of the strongest lyrical content on the record – sure to hit the heart and give you chills every time.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the record is the story behind its opening track, One Last Christmas. The song has inspired a made for television film premiering December 4th on GMC entitled The Heart of Christmas. Matthew wrote the holiday LP’s first single of the same name in tribute to the event that made national headlines earlier this year, which is the basis of the movie. The film tells the story of a 2-year old child from Illinois named Dax Locke, who died from leukemia, which he was plagued with for the more than half of his short life. The story made headlines when roughly 1000 people, including friends, family and even people who simply had heard of of Dax’s plight had paid their respects to the Washington boy by putting their holiday decorations up early just because Dax loved Christmas lights so much.
