Viral Video: Soldier Comes Out On YouTube
Just days after the U.S. Military declared the era of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell officially over, one very eager airman took this momentous occasion to come out to his family… and he put it on YouTube.
Randy Phillips, a 21-year-old airman stationed at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, has been chronicling his experiences as a queer member of the military on YouTube since last April. Up until recently, his videos have been headless and anonymous, and can be seen on the channel “AreYouSurprised.”
On the video, that has gone massively viral in the last day, Phillips calls his dad via Skype and tells him “I’m gay.” To which is father replies, “OK.” “I still love you son, it doesn’t change our relationship — and I always will, no matter what, all right? You are my son, and I am very proud of you.”
The fact that Phillips’ father is so completely unfazed and resolute in his response is all sorts of heartwarming.
