9-11 Coloring Book Stirs Up Controversy
Coloring books are typically meant to keep young children amused. Some are even used for educational purposes. That is the claim made by ColoringBook.com, the author of We Shall Never Forget 9/11: The Kids’ Book of Freedom, a new coloring book meant to educate children on the story of September 11, 2001 and the events that followed over the next decade.
The book is being described as a graphic coloring novel, and you might want to emphasize the “graphic.” Two of the pictures ready to have lil’ Leonardo da Vinci’s handy work applied to them seem to be a bit much. One shows the smoking World Trade Center, while another displays a Osama Bin Laden cowering behind a woman while being picked off by a Navy SEAL.
A message above the latter reads “Children, the truth is, these terrorist acts were done by freedom-hating Islamic Muslim extremists. These crazy people hate the American way of life because we are FREE and our society is FREE.”
Coloring Books Inc. publisher Wayne Bell proclaims this is not your ordinary coloring book. “It’s really designed for older kids, not preschoolers,” said Bell in a phone interview. “It’s designed to be a teaching and learning tool for parents and teachers to use with their children.”
Regardless of Bell’s intentions, it still isn’t going over well with many adults. “This should not be a coloring book,” said Gibbs in a Facebook response to a Stars and Stripes question. “If it were just a regular picture [book] I might consider it… but as is, I would not purchase this.”
